Why become a member? Isn't believing that Christ is my savior enough?
While God does not require church membership or attendance for salvation, He has provided the Church as a gift to believers so that we would better grow in your faith and encourage and challenge each other. Not only are we born again when we believe, but we are born into a big family [the Church]. God did not design us to be alone, but to be in relationship with Him and with others.
In Paul's letter to the Ephesian church, you can witness the kind of support we can give one another.
16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. [Ephesians 3 New International Version (NIV)]
I'm too old for Sunday School, aren't I?
Actually, no; we have studies for all ages and several small groups so that we continue to grow in our understanding of God's wonderful love and grace. Being a Christian is an lifetime process of becoming a new creature, whole and mature.
11Christ chose some of us to be apostles, prophets, missionaries, pastors, and teachers, 12so that his people would learn to serve and his body would grow strong. 13This will continue until we are united by our faith and by our understanding of the Son of God. Then we will be mature, just as Christ is, and we will be completely like him.
I have been hurt at other churches, how would this be different?
Forgiven does not mean we have "arrived"; instead, we as believers strive to Christ's standard of perfect love and the reality is that each of us fall short. Broken relationships in the church are not new, Paul reminded the Galatians to "serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”b]">[b]15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. [Galatians 5, New International Version (NIV)]
The first step to overcome your previous hurts is to forgive. If you find that you cannot forgive, pray to be able to forgive. Mending relationships is impossible without forgiveness. We were forgiven of our transgressions so that we could return to relationship with God. Just as we are forgiven, we are called to forgive.
