Scallop Shells as Religious Symbols for Baptism
Sometimes called "the pilgrim shell," the Scallop Shell represents pilgrimage, baptism, and renewal of life. The Apostle, James the Greater, carried this shell with him as he traveled preaching as instructed by Jesus Christ. This shell was, and remains to be in many Christian churches, dipped into the water, sprinkled on the head of the one baptized, and used as a remembrance of new birth in Jesus Christ.
It is said that the Apostle James carried a Scallop Shell with him and knowing the poor had little, would ask for food by offering the shell as a vessel for his meal.
